Using SKU's Effectively On Amazon |
|
|
Always use unique SKUs that relate only to one particular product; don't reuse the same SKU for a different product.
The SKU is the most important field for managing your Marketplace
inventory. You assign a SKU to each listing to uniquely identify it. A
SKU can be up to 40 characters long and can contain both letters and
numbers.SKUs must be unique for each listing because the Amazon system will not allow duplicate SKUs. Amazon recommends that you not reuse a particular SKU to list a different product, as this can create problems with your listings.
While SKUs can be any unique value chosen by the seller, a good practice is to use a combination of letters plus the product's ISBN or UPC. This method is an ideal way to manage multiple inventories with one single account or to list different conditions of the same product.
Example: Say a seller has separate inventories for two different stores that they'd like to combine for Amazon Marketplace. This can be easily handled by assigning a unique set of characters to each store and then combining these characters with the UPC or ISBN for the product.
Store 1 = AA Store 2 = BB Product UPC = 786936215595 SKU 1 = AA786936215595 SKU 2 = BB786936215595
This method can also be used if you have different copies of the same product in different conditions; for instance, a used DVD of Finding Nemo and a new, factory-sealed copy.
Amazon strongly advises that you do not create SKUs by simply numbering your inventory in sequential order. Sequential ordering makes it easy to accidentally reassign an old SKU to a new product.
However, when you use Inventory Source Services for drop ship resellers we take care of the unique SKU requierments for ALL products offered in the Inventory Source Network (ISN). |
